The Council, management and staff of NEDA, would like to congratulate those NGO’s that received Disability Representative Organisations (DRO) grants last Thursday, December 14th. The Australian Government, via the Department of Social Services (DSS), funded the disability sector to the tune of 5.3 million dollars over the coming two and a half years (until June 30th 2020).
This was an increase to the original proposal of 875 thousand dollars. These additional funds have broadened the scope of the sector bringing in to the tent other representative organisations and national peaks such as Mental Health Australia (MHA) and the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO); AFDO being a consortium of DRO providers.
The above-mentioned representative organisations are in addition to the previously funded National Peaks that make up the Disabled People’s Organisations Australia (DPOA), an alliance comprising of: People with Disability Australia (PWDA), First People’s Disability Network (FPDN) Women with Disabilities Australia (WWDA) and the National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA).
For NEDA these funds will ensure that our constituents and membership continue to have an opportunity to be heard. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) people with disability require effective and meaningful policy mechanisms to ensure their full social and economic participation. This is particularly the case for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the continued development and implementation of the National Disability Strategy (NDS).
NEDA is honoured to have played a role in the critical development of key policy and projects for CaLD people with disability over the last twenty-five years. We are keen to be engaged in the continued development of human rights based programmes and policies that will propagate a social model for people with disability, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their needs realised.
We at NEDA look forward to working closely and collaboratively with all organisations that were successful in this most recent DRO funding round.
